Active Release Technique (ART) is a patented, soft tissue system and massage technique that treats problems with muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia and nerves. Overuse conditions can often be resolved quickly and permanently with ART. Every ART session is a combination of examination and treatment. The provider uses his/her hands to evaluate the texture, tightness and movement of muscle, fascia, tendons, ligaments and nerves. Abnormal tissues are treated with precisely directed attention, combined with very specific patient movements. These treatment protocols (over 500 specific moves) are unique to ART, and allow the athletic trainer to identify and correct the specific problems that are affecting each individual client.
The provider athletic trainer will instruct you on how to move through a specific range of motion based upon the area being treated. He or she may apply pressure to the muscle being treated as it moves through this range of motion. Some discomfort may be experienced, but relief is generally felt immediately afterwards.
After an ART session, the patient should feel a release of tension in tight muscles, less pain due to the massaging technique, and experience an increased range of motion in what used to be problem areas.
Active Release Technique may be the best treatment option for you if you are affected by back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, shin splints, shoulder pain, sciatica, neck pain, plantar fasciitis, tennis elbow, or a similar condition.
